Neon Genesis Evangelion

Is there anyone left here to read this? :-)

I found this series in my new video hire shop (I had to move, I miss
Prahran). At first, I thought I was in luck - it seemed to be
sub-titled. But the awful truth was revealed. Who on earth chose the
'voices' <shudder> for that supercilious, collective IQ roughly 100,
panel?

Well, the new viewer is certainly thrown in at the deep end. :-) I
didn't read the blurb at all, even the mini-blurb on the front, so I
had no idea what to expect and no idea what was happening just at
first. All (or all relevant I suppose) was revealed. At first I
thought Raye (poor brave thing) was that callous doctor's daughter,
Shin-what-is-it's sister, but then I read the sleeve notes and
realised that she was one of three affected at the time of conception
during the first visit of the 'angels' (could we get any more puerile
than 'angels'? Really).

As usual I expect to find later on, having watched as much as is
available, that the 'real' NGE is quite different from the
sub-standard yank dub. Isn't it time something was done about this,
it's getting beyond a joke. One can't enjoy anime unless one speaks
Japanese and is rich enough to keep importing. But I suppose even an
inferior copy of the product is better than no product at all. I'm
still watching Pokemon, after all. :-)

So now I'm starting to get an idea of why this series was so popular.
No spoilers please, I haven't watched the third and fourth episodes
yet, and I do not want hints of what is coming in the future.

Yep.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is very great, and the story really starts to develop
after episode 14 (although everything you see up to that point lays the basis
for the story & characters really well).

Considering the first time I saw this was the SBS broadcasts, I'm used to
the English dub so don't find it too horrid. The DVDs have both English
& Japanese language tracks, so you can take your pick with those.

Of course, Gail, here's a warning: When you reach the end of the TV series,
you will be utterly, utterly confused. What happens in the last two episodes
is incredibly surreal and doesn't resolve the story. There are two movies
that follow the series which show a bit more of what happens (although you'll
probably still be going "What the ????" at the end of it, I am, and I've watched
the whole thing through 3 times).

So I suggest you do the following:
- watch episodes 1-26 through as you're doing
- watch "Death and Rebirth"
- watch "The End of Evangelion"
- watch episodes 25 & 26 again.

The two movies are available on DVD (not sure about video) and with luck
they'll be available to hire. I've seen the two movies in their own box
set now in a number of stores (Big W, eg, had the two movies for $40ish)

Enjoy! :) Eva is pretty much the one thing that got me into a fair bit
more anime than I otherwise would have watched... and since then I've
fallen in love with some of Miyazaki's work (Princess Mononoke, Spirited
Away) and may get around to checking out more :)

It was published in the media press somewhere that SBS had the rights to
the films and they would be showing them on Worlds Movies and then FTA
sometime.

There is a sequel to Ghost in the Shell coming out this year.

I did hear once that people found the series confusing, and the movies
confused them more, but that was all I knew. :-) I'm glad I started
watching without knowing anything at all in advance, as it's more
effective that way.

Thanks Danny, and dewatf too, I will keep an eagle eye peeled for the
DVDs when I have finished watching the series on video. I have to
continue now I have started, I can't stop. :-) Here is a show that
isn't little-Yank cheesy. It has real people with real failings that
can't (at this stage anyway) be resolved. Hooray for some realism.

I fell in love with anime ages ago, I think it was Sailor Moon that
started it, though I have been watching Pokemon as well. I like the
combination of magic, science fiction and anime. I would be taking an
interest in much more if not for the fact that they are nearly all
available in Australia as US dubs, oh well.
